Bucato* by Eleonora Di Erasmo Washing away the meaning that we commonly attribute to an object, removing its original purpose, to convert it into something else and reinvent its meaning. Hanging from a clothesline there is a bunch of objects made of fabric, embroidered with delicate flowers and golden threads. Only through a closer look can we distinguish their shapes, identifying a knife, a gun, a weapon, and so on. All of a sudden, the intrinsic contradiction in these objects becomes clear and highlights a disarming simplicity. For a second, it is possible to imagine the artist while she embroiders each one of her "weapons", before washing and hanging them up as we usually do with our laundry. Due to the softness of the material used and this powerful act of inversion, the weapons are reduced to impotent objects; after losing their original function, they become contemplative objects. The eye, initially shocked by the semantic illusion that death and destruction have been changed into innocence and beauty, can now observe them fearlessly. Water, earth, air: represented respectively by a submarine, a tank and an aircraft. The small weapons made of fabric become big methods of destruction. If the fabric weapons have been changed into inoffensive objects after being hung on a line, the three big pieces, on the other hand, lose and regain a new meaning, thanks to their bidimensionality. They are not only representations of real live objects but also simultaneously anti-representations of themselves, thus annulling the negative images that we usually associate with them. The observer, attracted by the beauty of the fabric with its antique patterns, is challenged to search for unexpected feelings and recreate new possible worlds.
