Aprons, stars and new kinds of stardust
by Pericle Guaglianone
To imagine a romantic Friedrich-style landscape today, in all its splendour and ruin, one must consider
the past two centuries of the history of the image, until conceptual art and beyound. The work of art
began to discuss itself rather than the outside world when it was defined as an "event" (heidegger),
an experience inherent to life ( the "arena of happenings" as critics described Pollock's canvas),
"ruin, or the promise of ruin" (Marc Augé, the theorist of the non-place in Rovine,published after the 9/11);
After Duchamps metalinguistic revolution, anything that happens in the World-of-Artwork, became art.
In this manner is Corpus, by PATRICIA CARMO BALTAZAR CORREA, an installation in which a series of
aprons records - and why not - even tells us about the different experiences of everydaylife.
Hanging upside down, these aprons become the anthropometry of life, demonstrating the importance
of collecting and showing them, rather than interpreting this existencial dimension of a workday.
They are silent and stoic hourglasses communicating the particles of time - the worker emerging over a work period, as stains. These pre-fabs transport the viewer to a compelling metaphor, while seemingly suspended in mid-air, like one out-on-a-limb.
A star glows in these upside-down aprons, and shows us a new kind of celestial chart, which one by one,
becomes a pattern of a part and counterpart (the marks Beuys called Gegenbild). Here, unlike the sculpture
of Gilberto Zorio, with their relaxed amd solemn physiognomy, arms and legs splayed, many abandoned yet
dauntless bodies dangle in the air - limb from limb, together with the stories of their livelihoods.
