Patricia Carmo Baltazar Correa's work is made of materials, moods, remains that are concretely deposited on a canvas that becomes an anthropometric space. These canvases are not square shaped, as we would expect, but are instead in the shape of cotton white aprons that are hung side by side, in sequence. Each apron was exposed to skilled hands for a week, hands that had time to live and print their lives on them, and then was returned to the artist to be exhibited.
The dirty aprons, used by different professional craftspeople, show us different uses and disclose everyday gestures; they almost undress those who wore them. Each profession becomes unique, anthropomorphic and abstract at the same time: harmonies and dissonances are made up of signs of grease, oil stains, remains of gold leaf used for restoration, flour and brake fluid.
Shown in the a.k.a.'s catacomb-like basement, the pieces seem to find their existential space, allowing the visitor to observe other details on the surfaces of several aprons that are even more intimate and revealing. The professions are not disclosed, but it is possible to guess each wearer's ordinary and repeated gestures.
A single statement can unveil the figurative aspect in this process: "It's simply the result of ten years of studying nudes." Figuration, ability and drawing describe the human race on the path to extinction, topsy-turvy just as in the exhibition.
Figure, ability and drawing describe the humanity facing extinction, upside down like the artist's installation.
